Kloster Anrode, Medieval Cistercian nunnery in Anrode, Germany
Kloster Anrode is a Cistercian nunnery located in the village of Anrode, situated on a narrow mountain ridge with the Luhne River to the north and the Gieße stream to the south. The complex contains residential, agricultural, and religious spaces that have survived to the present day.
The monastery was founded in 1267 by Cistercian nuns from Beuren Abbey and became a significant regional center. It endured damage during the Peasants' War and the Thirty Years' War before its secularization in 1810.
The monastery now serves the village as a gathering place for local festivals and markets that shape community life. The buildings reflect its former role as both a spiritual and economic hub for the surrounding area.
The grounds are accessible and can be visited while enjoying a break at the restaurant, which opens Saturday, Sunday, and public holidays from 14:30 onward. The agricultural museum housed in the barn requires advance booking, so visitors should arrange this beforehand.
A livestock and agricultural market happens twice monthly on the grounds from April through October, drawing regional farmers and enthusiasts. This market offers visitors a rare glimpse of how the monastery historically functioned as an economic and trading hub.
