Castra Mediana

This rectangular military fort spans 159 meters by 144 meters, covering 2.3 hectares of land in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district of Bavaria.

Constructed between 81 and 96 AD, the fort evolved from wooden-earth defenses to stone structures and remained operational until approximately 260 AD.

Archaeological excavations have uncovered inscriptions detailing the presence of the Cohors III Thracum civium Romanorum equitata, a part-mounted Roman military unit.

The site contains visible remains through gentle slopes and field paths, with geomagnetic surveys revealing the layout of former barracks and military facilities.

Three preserved inscriptions from the fort document construction phases and unit assignments, providing direct evidence of Roman military administration in Germania.
