Burg Spielberg, Medieval castle and art museum in Gnotzheim, Germany.
Burg Spielberg is a stone castle complex positioned on a hill of the Hahnenkamm ridge near Gnotzheim, built with multiple structures arranged around a fortified core. The property includes a western defensive wall and a four-story residential building that forms the main structure.
The fortress originated in the second half of the 12th century when the Spilberg family controlled it. During the 14th century the property passed into the hands of the Counts of Oettingen, who maintained ownership of the site.
The castle houses artworks by Ernst Steinacker and his family members, displayed here since the 1980s. The gallery shows contemporary art objects and sculptures that give visitors a window into the creative work of a local artistic family.
The art gallery operates on limited seasonal hours, while the castle courtyard remains open to visitors throughout the year on a daily basis. This means you can explore the outdoor grounds even when the gallery exhibition spaces are closed.
The chapel dedicated to Saint John within the castle was built in the medieval period and underwent major reconstruction in later centuries. Walking through this space reveals layers of different construction periods and architectural modifications from distinct eras.
