Burg Spielberg, Medieval castle and art museum in Gnotzheim, Germany.
Burg Spielberg is a medieval stone castle set on a hill of the Hahnenkamm ridge near Gnotzheim in Bavaria, Germany. The complex consists of a four-story residential tower, a western defensive wall, and a walled courtyard that together form a compact fortified compound.
The castle dates to the second half of the 12th century, when the Spilberg family built and held it. In the 14th century ownership passed to the Counts of Oettingen, who kept the property for several generations.
Since the 1980s, the castle has displayed works by Ernst Steinacker and his family. Sculptures and art objects fill the interior rooms, making the visit feel like entering a working family studio rather than a formal institution.
The art gallery inside operates on limited seasonal hours, but the castle courtyard stays open all year. Visiting outside gallery hours is still worthwhile, as the outdoor grounds can be explored freely.
A chapel dedicated to Saint John stands inside the complex and was built in the medieval period, then heavily reworked in later centuries. Looking closely at its walls and vaulting reveals traces of several distinct construction phases layered on top of each other.
