Kaufhaus Magis, Department store and architectural heritage monument in Mitte, Germany.
Kaufhaus Magis is a commercial and heritage building in Hannover's city center located at the intersection of Georgstraße and Bahnhofstraße. The facade displays modern design with wide window bands, a glazed staircase tower, and a rounded corner that makes the structure visually distinct.
The building was erected in 1952 by architects Paul and Rudolf Brandes together with Ludwig Thiele, replacing an earlier store destroyed during World War II. This new construction was part of the city center's post-war reconstruction effort.
The building was designed following modernist principles and shapes the city center's appearance as an active shopping destination today. The way people move through and interact with the storefronts shows how this modern structure fits into the rhythm of urban life.
The building today serves as retail space and is easily reached from the market square or pedestrian zone. The protected architecture remains visible while shops like H&M actively use the space.
The facade features a large illuminated star made of around 700 light bulbs, known as the Magis Star, which becomes especially prominent during the Christmas season. This distinctive sign has been part of the location's visual identity for decades.
