Jagdschloss Windenhütte

Jagdschloss Windenhütte is a stone building standing at 452 meters elevation on the northern edge of Blockhauswiese in the Lower Harz region. This forest-surrounded structure now operates as a hotel with nine rooms, garden balconies, and complimentary wireless internet access.

Duke Wilhelm of Brunswick built a wooden hunting cabin in 1872, which was replaced by the current stone structure between 1906 and 1908. This rebuild occurred during an era when the Harz region was favored for aristocratic hunting expeditions.

The building takes its name from the Windenhütte location and shifted from a hunting lodge after 1945 to serve as a forestry office. Later it became a holiday residence for research institute employees.

The location is accessible via forest hiking trails and serves as a good stopping point on longer walks. Visitors should bring weatherproof clothing and be prepared for elevation changes.

The building is registered as checkpoint number 59 in the Harzer Wandernadel hiking system, a stamp-collecting program with stations throughout the Harz. Hikers who gather all or many stamps receive souvenirs and certificates.
