Johanneskirche

The Johanneskirche stands as a three-nave hall church with twin towers reaching 64 meters high, overlooking the Saale River from its position near the marketplace.

Construction of the current Gothic structure began in 1380 following a fire that destroyed the previous Romanesque church in 1314, with completion of the choir vault in 1514.

The church underwent a transformation during the Reformation in 1524, becoming a center for Protestant worship under the leadership of superintendent Caspar Aquila in 1528.

The church contains six bells in its twin towers, with the largest one weighing 3.05 tons and serving both religious ceremonies and historical fire alert functions.

The Wilhelm Sauer organ from 1894 maintains 50 registers with mechanical action, restored between 1996 and 1998 to preserve its historical configuration.
