Schloss Saalfeld/Saale, Baroque castle in Saalfeld, Germany.
Schloss Saalfeld/Saale is a Baroque castle on Petersberg hill in the center of Saalfeld, Thuringia, made up of a main wing and two side wings with ornamental stone crownings. The building currently serves as the administrative seat of the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district.
Construction began in 1677 under Duke Albrecht and his six brothers, who chose this hilltop as the site for their new residence. The chapel was completed around 1720, giving the ensemble its final form.
Italian craftsmen shaped the staircase and chapel with detailed stonework that stands in clear contrast to the plain outer facade. Walking through these interior spaces, visitors notice how much care went into the decorative details compared to the building's restrained exterior.
The castle stands on a hill in central Saalfeld and can be reached on foot from the town center by following the paths that lead up the slope. Since the building is in active use as an office, interior access is available through guided tours, so it helps to plan ahead.
The chapel, after a full restoration in 1984, now serves as a concert and event hall open to the public. This means a religious space from the early 18th century regularly fills with music and audiences, which few visitors expect to find inside a working government building.
