Castle Dillich

Castle Dillich is a fortified structure in Borken-Dillich featuring a rectangular main building with a polygonal stair tower on the eastern side. A lower hall extends from the western section, and sandstone walls enclose the entire surrounding grounds.

An earlier water castle existed around 1335 but was replaced by a new structure around 1361. Major reconstruction work between 1575 and 1591 transformed the building into the form it holds today.

The castle served for centuries as the seat of a local noble family that governed the surrounding lands and people from within its walls. Their presence shaped how the place looked and functioned, linking it inseparably to the region's social structure.

The property is enclosed by sandstone walls and spans about 2.5 hectares, allowing for a pleasant walk around the structure. Since the entire site is protected as a cultural monument, it is important to follow any signs or guidance provided on-site.

Since 2017, Buddhist monks from Thailand have occupied the castle, transforming it into a residence and seminar center. This unexpected modern use brings a contemporary dimension to a structure rooted in medieval traditions.
