Kaserne, Military barracks in Eilenburg, Germany
Kaserne Eilenburg is a former military complex with several buildings whose sturdy construction was designed for troop accommodation, training, and administration. The ensemble shows the typical layout of an early 20th-century military installation.
The complex was built from 1913 under architect Otto Lemke and served as barracks for the 4th Thuringian Infantry Regiment during World War I. After 1945 the site was repeatedly converted to new uses.
The site shows how military architecture of that era was designed for function, with plain building forms typical of soldier housing. Today you can still see this straightforward, practical building style in the structures.
The site is partly accessible, with some buildings now used for civilian purposes such as offices and youth facilities. Visitors should note that some areas are private property or in active use.
The 2002 flood caused major damage to basement and ground floor levels of several buildings on the grounds. The extensive renovation work that followed substantially changed the appearance of some structures.
