Kaffeerösterei August Münchhausen, Coffee roastery in Stephaniviertel, Bremen, Germany
Kaffeerösterei August Münchhausen is a coffee roastery in Bremen's Stephaniviertel that processes around fourteen tons of coffee annually, specializing in custom blends of highland coffee varieties from around the world. The roastery sources its green coffee from multiple global suppliers and creates specialty blends according to its own recipes.
August Münchhausen founded a coffee and tea mail-order business in 1935 and installed a roasting facility in the building at Geeren 24 in 1938. The operation survived wartime challenges and reconstruction to become an established family enterprise.
The roastery preserves equipment from the 1950s and 1960s, including the original Gothot drum roaster from 1958, which represents Bremen's coffee roasting heritage. Visitors can observe these historical machines in daily operation.
The roasting process takes between 12 and 25 minutes depending on the coffee variety, with temperatures ranging from 200 to 220 degrees Celsius, and visitors can watch it happen. It helps to check in advance when roasting takes place so you can observe the process in action.
During World War II, the roastery had to switch to producing coffee substitutes after authorities confiscated their inventory. This challenging period shows how the business creatively adapted in order to survive.
