Luftlandebrigade 25 „Schwarzwald“, Ehemaliger Großverband der Bundeswehr
Luftlandebrigade 25 Schwarzwald was an airborne infantry brigade of the German armed forces based primarily in Calw, Baden-Württemberg. The unit consisted of several parachute battalions, artillery units, and support companies distributed across Calw and Nagold in the Black Forest region.
The brigade was formed in May 1957 as a small parachute combat unit and renamed in 1959 as part of the first airborne division. It relocated to Calw and Nagold in 1961 and received its final name Luftlandebrigade 25 in 1971, before being disbanded in 1996.
The unit adopted the nickname Schwarzwald Brigade in 1989, linking its identity to the Black Forest region where many of its soldiers were stationed. This connection to the landscape shaped the pride and spirit of those who served there.
Traces of the former brigade are still visible in Calw and Nagold, including military buildings and training grounds that remain from its operational years. Local museums and veteran groups preserve the memory of the unit's history and Cold War operations for visitors today.
The unit led Operation Kurdenhilfe in Iraq in 1991 and supported humanitarian missions in Bosnia in 1994, marking the only times the brigade deployed outside Germany. These international operations reveal how the unit transitioned from Cold War readiness to peacekeeping work.
