St. Märgen's Abbey

The baroque abbey church of St. Mary of the Assumption stands at an elevation of 900 meters in the southern Black Forest region.

Founded in 1118 as Cella Sanctae Mariae, the monastery underwent five reconstructions after fires, with the last restoration occurring in 1907.

The church maintains its role as a principal Marian pilgrimage destination within the Archdiocese of Freiburg, drawing religious visitors throughout the year.

The monastery complex includes multiple walking paths, offering access to the surrounding Black Forest landscape and natural swimming areas.

Matthias Faller, a notable rococo woodcarver, created distinctive artistic works during his time at the monastery, influencing regional religious art.
