Founded in 1989 in a former spa treatment building near the city center, the museum collected regional artifacts until its temporary closure in 2018.
The permanent exhibition included natural history collections, featuring the Sterley collection of fossils and minerals from the surrounding region.
The museum remains closed as it undergoes restructuring and preparations for relocation to the former courthouse building in Bad Schwartau.
A 20-meter-tall giant sequoia tree, designated as a natural monument since November 1992, stands in front of the museum building.
