Burg im Riesebusch

The castle sits on a narrow ridge reaching 16 meters in height, surrounded by a meandering loop of the Schwartau River.

Built in the 13th century, the castle served as a fortified economic center for the Bishop of Lübeck until 1284.

Archaeological excavations in 1914 revealed foundation remains of a gatehouse constructed from gathered stones within the main castle area.

Information panels at the site display layouts of the castle grounds and showcase findings from archaeological excavations.

The castle required fortifications only on specific sections, as steep slopes on the eastern and western sides provided natural defense.
