Burg im Riesebusch, Medieval castle in Bad Schwartau, Germany.
Burg im Riesebusch is a medieval fortress in Bad Schwartau situated on a narrow ridge surrounded by the winding course of the Schwartau River. The elevated terrain reaches about 16 meters and is protected on three sides by the waterway and steep natural slopes.
The fortress was built in the 13th century as a fortified economic center for the Bishop of Lübeck until 1284. After this date it ceased to serve its original function and was gradually abandoned.
The name refers to the dense bush growth that characterizes the location, reflecting how vegetation has always defined this space. Visitors can observe today how nature has embraced the former stronghold and woven it into the surrounding landscape.
Information panels at the site display layouts of the fortress and showcase discoveries from archaeological digs. Access is straightforward and the grounds offer good vantage points to understand the natural landscape formation.
The fortress required fortifications only on certain sections because steep slopes on the east and west sides provided natural defense. Archaeological digs in 1914 uncovered foundation stones of a gatehouse built from gathered materials.
