MiRO, company
MiRO is an oil refinery in Karlsruhe, Germany, located near the Rhine River and the largest in the country. The facility covers about 1,131 acres (458 hectares) with complex systems that process crude oil into gasoline, diesel, heating oil, and various industrial materials.
An Esso refinery opened at the site in 1962, followed by a second facility operated by DEA-Scholven starting in 1993. The two plants officially merged in 1996 to form the present-day MiRO, creating one of Europe's largest refining operations.
The name MiRO comes from the merger of two refineries that once operated as separate facilities in the area. The complex shapes the local landscape with towers and pipes that define the industrial character of Karlsruhe's riverfront.
The refinery is located about 95 miles (150 kilometers) south of Frankfurt near the Rhine River in an accessible area. Visitors should note this is an active industrial facility where access is typically restricted and requires prior authorization.
The facility supplies heat and fuel daily to about 10 million people across southwestern Germany. What stands out is the use of the Rhine River for barge transport of products, enabling efficient logistics that many visitors do not realize while viewing the complex.
