The castle changed ownership multiple times since the 17th century, with Friedrich von der Borch renovating its southwest side in 1705.

The museum includes an archive with an extensive scientific library established by the Heritage and Museum Association founded in 1911.
The maritime hall of the museum now serves as a civil registry office where couples can hold their wedding ceremonies.
