Schloss Schönebeck

Schloss Schönebeck is a half-timbered water castle located in the valley of the Schönebecker Aue, where a stream creates a pond near the castle grounds. The building now serves as a museum and houses an extensive archive with a scientific library.

The castle changed hands multiple times since the 17th century, with Friedrich von der Borch carrying out a major renovation of the southwest side in 1705. This redesign shaped how the building would look for centuries to come.

The museum displays exhibitions about maritime history and the former Wittenburg stoneware factory that once operated in the area. Visitors can see how these traditions shaped local life and work.

The museum is housed in the castle and can be visited during opening hours, with archive collections also available for research purposes. Visitors should plan ahead as the library may require specialized requests.

A room in the maritime hall of the museum now serves as a civil registry office where couples can hold their wedding ceremonies. This connects the historic castle to modern life in an unexpected way.
