Rysum Church

Rysum Church stands atop a village mound and was built from Dutch bricks and tuffstones. The structure measures approximately 35 meters in length and features a massive brick tower that was added in the 14th century.

The building originally rose as a wooden structure in the 11th century but was replaced with a stone version in the 12th century. The distinctive brick form took shape gradually through modifications that extended into the 14th century.

The interior displays memorial plaques honoring residents of nearby manor houses, while the choir contains inscriptions that reference noble connections. These details reveal how deeply the building was tied to the local ruling families.

The church is located at Turmstraße 3 in Krummhörn Rysum and can be visited through guided tours that require prior arrangement. Access to the building depends on scheduling, so visitors should plan ahead before making the trip.

The building houses a working organ dating to 1457, considered one of the oldest playable instruments of its type in Northern Europe. This organ represents both a work of craftsmanship and a living connection to centuries-old musical traditions.
