Siel und Schöpfwerk Knock

The Siel und Schöpfwerk Knock controls water levels through two sluice gates measuring 11.5 meters in width and four centrifugal pumps handling 15,000 liters per second.

The construction of this water management facility took place between 1968 and 1969, making it the largest floodgate and pumping station in Europe at the time.

The facility demonstrates the engineering methods developed in Lower Saxony to manage water in regions where one-third of the land sits below sea level.

The system maintains winter water levels at -1.40 meters and summer levels at -1.27 meters, ensuring proper drainage for 35,000 hectares of surrounding land.

The facility includes a 42-hectare water retention basin and manages drainage through the Knockster Tief channel into the Ems River.
