Schloss Taxis

Schloss Taxis is a castle complex near Dischingen located on a hilltop between two villages, with multiple buildings arranged around a spacious courtyard. The ensemble is accessed through two gate entrances that define the overall composition of this noble residence.

The site originated as a medieval fortress but was purchased in 1734 by the Thurn und Taxis family, who then transformed it into a stately noble residence. Most of the buildings and modifications that shape its current appearance were made during their ownership.

The buildings around the courtyard reflect distinct architectural periods that were added over time, creating a layered visual history. Walking around the grounds, you can observe how Renaissance, Baroque, and later styles blend together in the structures.

The castle remains in private ownership by the Thurn und Taxis family and is not open for regular public visits inside. However, the exterior remains visible and the hilltop location provides views over the surrounding landscape.

Princess Auguste of Württemberg spent time under house arrest here following allegations connected to her husband, Prince Karl Anselm. This episode linked the castle to a dramatic period in European nobility and court intrigue.
