Englischer Wald, Park near Schloss Taxis, Dischingen, Germany.
Englischer Wald is a landscaped forest park near Schloss Taxis featuring alternating meadows and wooded sections with diverse tree species. Several marked circular routes between 1.8 and 2.8 kilometers (1.1 and 1.7 miles) connect different areas and historical structures throughout the grounds.
The park developed in the late 1700s when Prince Carl Anselm von Thurn und Taxis acquired significant portions of Dischingen's communal forest in 1781. He gradually expanded and reshaped the grounds according to English garden principles over subsequent decades.
The landscape follows English garden design with naturally arranged trees and open meadows that invite leisurely walks through varied terrain. This approach stands in contrast to formal baroque gardens of the same era, which favored strict geometry and structured planting.
The marked trails are well-maintained and pass through varying terrain, allowing for natural stopping points during walks. Wear sturdy footwear since forest paths can become muddy, especially after rain, and some sections may feel uneven underfoot.
A hunting lodge built in 1859 stands within the forest and served as a training facility for the Thurn and Taxis family's hunting skills. This structure offers a rare glimpse into the leisure pursuits of the local noble family during the mid-1800s.
