Katzenstein Castle, Medieval castle in Dischingen, Germany
Katzenstein Castle stands on a hill at 538 meters elevation near the Egau river valley, featuring multiple towers and defensive walls overlooking the Härtsfeld region.
The castle originated in 1099 under the Lords von Cassenstein, who served as ministerial knights for the Count of Dillingen, and underwent reconstruction after a fire in 1648.
The St Laurentius chapel contains medieval paintings from 1250 to 1280 that remained hidden under layers of dirt and partial Baroque decorations until 1973.
The castle includes dining rooms and hotel accommodations for visitors, with access through the Frankensträßle road in the Heidenheim district of Baden-Württemberg.
The structure represents one of the oldest surviving Hohenstaufen castles in southern Germany, positioned strategically near an ancient Roman road.
