Kraftwerk Harbke

Kraftwerk Harbke is a coal-fired power station at the edge of the Helmstedt lignite mining region, featuring multiple industrial structures and electrical transmission systems. The facility connected to three voltage levels and supplied electricity to towns between Helmstedt and Gardelegen through overhead power lines.

The station was built in 1909 by Harbker Kohlenwerke AG to meet growing electricity demand in the region. It underwent major upgrades over the following decades to increase its power output.

This power station represents how Germany built its industrial strength through energy production in the early 20th century. The site shows how central the region became to supplying electricity across multiple provinces.

Wear sturdy shoes and bring weather-appropriate clothing, as the site has extensive outdoor areas and industrial structures to view. Access is restricted to certain areas since this is a former industrial facility now protected as a cultural monument.

After Germany was divided, the plant received a new name and operated under East German state control for several decades. Its closure in 1990 marked the end of an era for this key power supply facility in the eastern region.
