Kölner Grüngürtel

Kölner Grüngürtel is a semicircular green belt system that stretches across different districts, connecting meadows, pathways, and planted areas. The network offers various zones with sports facilities, green spaces for relaxation, and walking routes that weave through the city.

The system was created in the 1920s from a plan to transform former fortress grounds into green spaces. This conversion changed the city's layout and created a continuous open area for the growing urban population.

The green belt serves as a gathering place where neighbors meet for everyday activities like jogging, walking, and picnicking. Families use the open spaces regularly to spend time outdoors and step away from the urban surroundings.

The belt is accessible from several residential areas via public transport or on foot, with multiple entry points along its route. The well-developed pathways make it easy to navigate, whether on short walks or longer outings.

Many trees throughout the belt date from the original planting in the 1920s and now serve as distinctive landmarks in the landscape. These older specimens show how the green space planning has continued across multiple generations.
