Kölner Grüngürtel, Green belt in Cologne, Germany
The green belt forms a semicircular park that extends for 7 kilometers from the Rhine riverbank in Cologne-Riehl to Luxemburger Street.
In 1919, after World War I, Mayor Konrad Adenauer initiated the transformation of former fortress grounds into an extensive urban park system.
The green spaces throughout the belt accommodate multiple sports facilities, including football fields, basketball courts, and table tennis areas for community activities.
The area connects to several residential districts through public transport stations at University Street and Hans-Böckler-Platz, making it accessible from multiple points.
The park system contains trees planted in the 1920s that now provide natural shade across the grounds between Colonius Tower and Aachen Street.
