Königsturm, Medieval tower in Bockenem, Germany
Königsturm is a medieval tower in Bockenem featuring a conical slate roof and thick walls of shell limestone. The structure reaches about 16 meters tall and stands prominently in the landscape between Bockenem and Bornum am Harz.
The tower was built around 1440 as part of a defense system commissioned by Bishop Johann III to protect the Hildesheim principality. It was one of five fortified structures along the Bockenem Landwehr border installation.
The tower marks the location of the ancient Via Regia, a royal road connecting the Brüggen royal court to the Imperial Palace of Dahlum and Werla.
The tower is located on Federal Highway 243 between Bockenem and Bornum am Harz and can be viewed from the outside. Visitors should know that the structure is now valuable mainly for nature conservation, as it provides nesting spaces for bats and kestrels.
Of the original five defensive towers of the Bockenem Landwehr, only this one survives to this day. The structure shows how medieval border fortifications looked and how they worked.
