Köpfhaus, Architectural heritage building at Fuggerplatz 9, Augsburg, Germany
Köpfhaus is a three-story corner building on Fuggerplatz 9 with a saddle roof, ornamental scrollwork, and a lower annex structure. Its richly decorated facades on the north and west sides display careful architectural detailing.
Master builder Johannes Holl unified multiple existing structures into one building in 1578 and created a coherent north facade. Renovations in 1738 by the Köpf family added ornate interior decoration to the space.
The name comes from the Köpf family, who owned and shaped the building as wealthy Augsburg residents. The ceiling frescoes on the ground floor still show the artistic craftsmanship of the 18th century.
The building sits right next to the Fuggerdenkmal memorial and is easy to locate when exploring Fuggerplatz. Its ground floor hosts a coffee establishment where visitors can rest while observing the surroundings.
The building survived World War II air raids with minimal damage, making it a rare example of preserved architecture from that period. After the war it was later integrated into the Karstadt department store complex.
