Kösterbeck, Nature reserve in Dummerstorf and Roggentin, Germany.
Kösterbeck is a nature reserve spanning morainic terrain with hills up to 50 meters (164 feet) high between Dummerstorf and Roggentin. Stream systems and grasslands form the core of this protected landscape.
The area was inhabited by Slavic settlers between 800 and 1000 AD, leaving evidence of early occupation. The castle hill at Fresendorf marks a key settlement site from this period.
Sheep of the Rauhwolliges Pommersches Landschaf breed graze here to maintain open grasslands as they have for generations. This traditional practice shapes what you see when walking through the reserve.
Access the reserve through marked paths from Roggentin and Fresendorf. Wear sturdy shoes as the hilly terrain can become muddy after rain.
The Kösterbeck stream flows from east to west and shelters rare freshwater pearl mussels found nowhere else nearby. This stream offers one of the few remaining habitats for these delicate creatures.
