Melsungen is a district in northern Hesse, Germany, centered on the town of the same name and stretching along the Fulda River valley. The area includes several smaller towns and villages spread between river lowlands and forested hillsides.
The district was established in 1821 as an independent administrative unit and kept that form for well over a century. In 1974, as part of a regional reform, it merged with neighboring areas to become part of the Schwalm-Eder district.
People from this area call themselves Bartenwetzer, a name rooted in the old trade of hardening axes that was once common here. The term is still used today as a mark of local identity and regional pride.
