Oberfeuer Tinsdal, Leading lighthouse in Rissen, Germany
Oberfeuer Tinsdal is a hexagonal steel tower in Altona along the Elbe River, standing 42 meters tall. The structure features white exterior walls with red bands and a black lantern roof at the top.
The lighthouse began operating in 1900 with a kerosene lamp as its light source. The system was upgraded to gas-powered incandescent light in 1927 to improve brightness.
This lighthouse is part of a navigation system along the Elbe River that helps ships find their way through the waterway. The red bands on its white exterior make it easy for boat captains to spot from a distance.
The lighthouse is easy to spot from the water and serves as a navigation guide on the Elbe River. Visitors should know that it sits in a port area and can only be viewed from the outside.
Since 1979 the lighthouse has operated fully automatically without any on-site staff supervision. Today all control and maintenance functions are managed remotely, showing how shipping technology has evolved.
