Burg Lauterburg, Medieval castle ruins in Rödental, Germany
The remnants of Burg Lauterburg stand on a forested hill at the edge of Oberwohlsbach, featuring stone foundations and vaulted cellars from its original structure.
First documented in 1156 as Castrum Luterberg, the castle passed through multiple noble families until Imperial troops captured and destroyed it in 1635.
The Heimatverein Rödental local history association undertook extensive restoration work between 1989 and 1999 to preserve the archaeological heritage of the site.
Visitors can reach the castle ruins through a nature trail connecting Schloss Rosenau to Fornbachsgrund, with parking available for a 20-minute walk to the site.
The castle grounds contain 169 original window openings, though most of the structure was demolished in 1959 due to safety concerns.
