Burg Lauterburg

Burg Lauterburg is a castle ruin located on a forested hilltop near Oberwohlsbach, with stone walls and vaulted cellars remaining from its original medieval structure. The visible remains consist mainly of foundations and lower stonework that reveal the building methods used centuries ago.

The structure was first documented in 1156 and passed through several noble families over the centuries. Imperial troops destroyed it in 1635 during a major conflict that affected the region.

The name Lauterburg comes from the nearby Lauterbach river, and today the remaining walls sit naturally within the forested landscape. Local volunteers have worked to maintain the site so visitors can experience its connection to the region's past.

The ruin is accessible via a nature trail connecting nearby sites, with parking available for about a 20-minute walk to reach it. The terrain is forested and may vary in difficulty depending on the season and weather conditions.

The grounds preserve traces of approximately 169 original window openings, even though much of the structure was demolished in 1959 for safety reasons. These details hint at the size and importance of the original building before modern times left only these remains.
