Boberger Niederung, Nature reserve in Bergedorf, Germany
Boberger Niederung is a protected area of about 350 hectares in Hamburg's east with dunes, marshes, moors, and a lake creating different habitats. These varied landscapes support different plants and animals that live here.
Sand dunes once extended from Berliner Tor to Bergedorf but were partly destroyed by sand mining in the 1800s. Today the reserve protects what remains of these dunes and their natural habitats.
The visitor center shares stories about how the dunes formed and why this landscape matters to local life. It helps you understand the connection between the people living nearby and the nature around them.
Four marked trails loop through different landscapes with routes between three and five kilometers long. Wear proper footwear since the ground is uneven and often wet.
The area is home to over 100 rare plant species and is Hamburg's only dune surrounded by heathland. This combination makes it a particularly valuable natural space.
