Neuköllner Oper, Opera house and theatre in Neukölln, Germany.
The Neuköllner Oper is an opera house and theater in the Neukölln district of Berlin, housed in a former ballroom that is part of the Rixdorf assembly rooms. The main hall seats around 220 people, and a smaller studio space holds about 60 spectators.
The theater was founded in 1977 and moved to its current building in 1988, a structure from 1909 that was originally built as part of the Rixdorf assembly rooms. Before becoming a theater, the building had already served the neighborhood for decades as a gathering place.
The Neuköllner Oper is known for staging works that draw on everyday life in the neighborhood, reaching audiences who would rarely step into a traditional opera house. The mix of people in the audience reflects the area around Karl-Marx-Straße itself.
The theater sits on Karl-Marx-Straße and is easy to reach by public transport from central Berlin. It is worth arriving a little before showtime, as the entrance can be easy to miss for first-time visitors.
Since it opened, the theater has produced over 250 world premieres, which is rare for a venue of this size anywhere in Germany. Many of those works were created by artists based in Berlin and written specifically for this stage.
