Raakmoor, Protected area in Wandsbek, Germany.
Raakmoor is a nature reserve in Hamburg containing wetlands, forest sections, and recovering peat bogs spread across about 33 hectares. The landscape shows various stages of natural regeneration across its protected area.
The area was extensively mined for peat and later drained before receiving protected status in 1979. This designation began a long process of ecological restoration that continues today.
The name Raakmoor comes from the moorlands that have shaped this area for centuries. You can observe how nature is gradually reclaiming and healing itself in this recovering landscape.
A circular trail of about 6 kilometers winds through the reserve, with an optional 4-kilometer extension to a former landfill hill. Wear sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing since the ground is boggy and wet in many sections.
The reserve hosts specialized bog plants like sphagnum moss, bog asphodel, and sundew that thrive in wet and acidic conditions. Rare butterfly species and viper populations indicate the high ecological importance of the moorland.
