Ochsenkopf

Ochsenkopf is a mountain summit in the Fichtel Mountains reaching 1,024 meters, crowned by both an observation tower and a transmission tower at its peak. Two chairlifts connect the summit to surrounding valleys, offering access from different directions.

The mountain takes its name from mining activities that began in 1495, when the name first appeared in official mining records. This early economic importance shaped the region's relationship with the landscape.

The summit serves as a meeting point for people from surrounding villages who come to hike, ski, or enjoy views together. This shared use has shaped how the mountain functions as a social center for the area.

Visitors can hike up on foot or use one of the two chairlifts to reach the summit more quickly. The best time to explore is on dry days when the towers are accessible and visibility is good.

The European watershed runs across the summit, separating water flowing toward the Rhine from water flowing toward the Danube. This geographical divide remains invisible to visitors but shapes the hydrology of entire surrounding regions.
