Description
Ochsenmoor is a nature reserve located between Dümmer Lake and the western Dümmer lowland, composed of wetlands, reed marshes, and scattered swamp forests. The area spans more than a thousand hectares with diverse habitats supporting specialized wildlife and plant communities.
History
Rewetting projects began in the 1980s across major sections to enhance biological habitats and restore degraded wetlands. These restoration efforts were completed around the year 2000 and shaped the landscape visitors see today.
Culture
Shepherds use Diepholzer Moorschnucken sheep to keep the landscape open as part of traditional management that supports ground-nesting birds. The grazing animals are integral to daily care that maintains suitable conditions for specialized bird species.
Practical
A nature conservation station welcomes visitors daily with an accessible exhibition and a discovery trail featuring multiple educational stations spread throughout the grounds. The facilities are designed to be barrier-free so all visitors can explore comfortably.
