Venner Moor, Nature reserve in Ostercappeln, Germany.
Venner Moor is a nature reserve encompassing about 220 hectares of moorland between Venne and Hunteburg. The terrain provides habitat for cotton grass, sundew plants, and various sphagnum moss species in wetland conditions.
The moorland formed approximately 11,500 years ago following the last Ice Age, when meltwater and rainfall created water-saturated conditions. This wet environment allowed the growth of the distinctive vegetation that characterizes the area today.
The walking trail Venner Moorpfad helps visitors understand the moor's role in the local environment through information stations along the route. The path shows how people today interact with and protect this natural area.
Visitors can access the nature reserve through marked parking areas near Gasthaus Beinker or by using local bus transportation. The walking route is suitable for day trips and requires sturdy footwear due to the wet ground conditions.
Since 1992 protection efforts have focused on rewetting previously drained areas. This allows native plant species to reclaim their natural habitats and restore the ecosystem.
