Numburg

Numburg is a castle complex in Kyffhäuserland located on elevated terrain, with two distinct fortified sections - an inner and outer bailey. The site contains multiple building remains and wall structures that illustrate the layout of a medieval fortress.

Numburg was founded in 1116 as a strategic fortified position during the territorial expansions of the High Middle Ages. The fortress shaped the defensive capabilities of the region for centuries.

The ruins display medieval fortress construction with characteristic defensive walls and watchtowers designed for protection. Visitors can today understand how the spatial layout served defensive purposes.

The site is accessible year-round via marked trails that connect to the regional hiking network of Kyffhäuserland. Sturdy footwear is advisable due to uneven terrain.

Preserved limestone wall sections reveal 12th-century building methods used by medieval masons. These stone remains show how fortress walls were constructed over 900 years ago.
