Rothenberg Fortress, Medieval fortress in Schnaittach, Germany.
Rothenberg Fortress is a castle ruin standing on a hilltop near Schnaittach with thick defensive walls and vaulted interior spaces. The site contains multiple buildings and structures that show how a medieval military installation was laid out.
The fortress was built in the early 1300s by Dietrich von Wildenstein to control the region. It later passed to Charles IV, who held it to protect his territorial interests in the area.
The fortress was home to soldiers and their families who lived and worked together within these walls. The layout of barracks, storage rooms, and a chapel shows how daily garrison life was organized and functioned.
The site is partly freely accessible, with the bridge and gate available to explore. Visitors should note that certain areas may be closed depending on the season to protect wildlife.
Underground casemates shelter bats during winter, which is why these passages are closed during colder months. This protection measure makes the fortress an important refuge for wildlife in the region.
