Red Main Spring, Natural spring in Lindenhardt Forest, Germany.
Red Main Spring emerges at 581 meters elevation on the southern slopes of Tannenberg mountain and is a freshwater source in Lindenhardt Forest. The water flows from a stone enclosure and wooden pipe into the landscape below.
The site was regulated in 1907 through a stone enclosure that directed water flow intentionally. This work marked the transition from a wild to a managed spring.
The spring takes its name from the reddish sediments and boggy ground that give the water its distinctive coloring. This tint makes the source easy to spot in the landscape.
The spring lies about 10 kilometers south of Bayreuth near Hörlasreuth and is reachable on foot or by bike. Several hiking and cycling routes through Franconian Switzerland start from this point.
Two significant rivers originate at this location: the Red Main and the Fichtenohe share the same geographical source. This rare occurrence makes the spot a special hydrographic junction.
