Schloss Amerang, Medieval castle in Amerang, Germany
Schloss Amerang is a castle in the Chiemgau region of Upper Bavaria, set on a rocky hill that rises above the surrounding village. Its inner courtyard has a trapezoidal shape and is lined on three sides with open arcade galleries that run across three floors.
The first written record of the castle dates to 1072, though the building standing today took shape mainly during a rebuilding phase in the 16th century. It was during that phase that the Scaligeri family introduced the Renaissance elements that still define its appearance.
The arcaded courtyard shows a style of open gallery architecture that is rarely seen this far north in Europe. Walking through the arches gives a clear sense of how ideas from southern Europe once traveled into Bavarian building traditions.
The castle now operates as a hotel, so some interior areas are reserved for guests staying overnight. The site sits on a hill, which means visitors should wear comfortable shoes when walking around the grounds.
Within the castle grounds, there is a breeding facility for Pura Raza Española horses that was recognized in 2015 as the top stud farm for this breed in Germany. Finding a working horse breeding operation inside a medieval castle is something few visitors expect.
