Frederick III commissioned the initial construction in 1500, while Margrave Augustus I of Saxony rebuilt it between 1572 and 1575, naming it after his wife Anne.
The main building contains a museum dedicated to Augustus the Pious and his wife Anne, displaying Renaissance period art collections and historical exhibits.
The château complex currently houses residential apartments and a primary school, while remaining sections are open for scheduled guided tours.
Princess Anne of Denmark established both a distillery for aquavit production and a medical facility where apothecaries provided care for pregnant women.
