Schloss Ebersberg

Schloss Ebersberg, Medieval castle in Auenwald, Germany

Schloss Ebersberg is a castle situated on a ridge above Ebersberg and Lippoldsweiler villages with a distinctive round keep and thick stone walls. The complex includes multiple buildings and a central courtyard that form the typical layout of a medieval fortified residence.

The fortress was founded in the early 12th century by the Herren von Ebersberg family as a stronghold for the local nobility. Major baroque renovations in the early 1700s transformed its appearance and interior spaces.

Saint Michael's Chapel inside holds an ornate plaster ceiling from the 1700s that shows how religious spaces evolved within the fortress walls. Visitors can observe how artistic styles changed across different periods of occupation.

The castle now operates as a self-catering facility managed by a youth organization for group stays and events. Visitors should check access conditions beforehand, as the site primarily serves organized groups rather than casual day-trippers.

The keep of this fortress ranks among the oldest surviving towers from the Staufer era, a period when this region saw intensive castle construction throughout the medieval period. Its unusually thick walls reflect advanced defensive engineering techniques of that time.
