Schloss Eberstein, Medieval castle and vineyard in Gernsbach, Germany

Description

Schloss Eberstein is a hilltop fortress overlooking the Murg valley with a gatehouse featuring arrow slits and a two-story cavalier building. The structure now functions as a four-star hotel and restaurant in the same location.

History

The fortress was built between 1235 and 1272 by the Counts of Eberstein. From the 17th century onwards, it belonged to the Margrave of Baden until it became privately owned in 2000.

Culture

The castle houses a yellow sandstone crucifixion sculpture from the 15th century that reflects local artistic traditions of the time. This religious artwork connects to other sacred pieces found in the surrounding region.

Practical

Access to the site involves climbing a hillside, so wear sturdy shoes and allow time for the ascent. The grounds are steep in places but regularly maintained and safe to navigate.

Did you know?

The vineyard on the steep slopes above the Murg valley has produced wine continuously for more than 600 years. This long tradition of winemaking gives the property a deep connection to the region's rural heritage.
