Sachsenhain, Memorial and commercial forest in Verden, Germany
Sachsenhain is a memorial forest near Verden with approximately 4,500 stones arranged along a two-kilometer walking path. Five reconstructed half-timbered houses stand in the northern section, completing this combined memorial and educational site.
The forest was constructed between 1934 and 1936 under National Socialist direction as a commemoration of events from the year 782. The arrangement of stones and the site's design reflect how this history was interpreted during that era.
The name refers to the Saxon leaders whose story shapes the site's meaning, and visitors encounter this history through the arranged stones and educational displays along the forest paths. The layout itself tells a story of how communities remember difficult chapters of their past.
The forest is freely accessible with well-marked walking trails suitable for families with children. Information panels along the route explain the grounds, making a self-guided visit straightforward and comfortable.
Local farmers contributed ancient megalithic stones to the memorial, including runestones and sacrificial stones that were moved from their original locations. These stones connect local traditions with the site's creation.
