Sackpfeife, Mountain summit in Rothaar Mountains, Germany
Sackpfeife is a mountain summit in the Rothaar Mountains of Hesse, sitting on the boundary between Waldeck-Frankenberg and Marburg-Biedenkopf counties. At the top, an old observation tower and a transmission station stand side by side and are clearly visible from the surrounding trails.
The Kaiser Wilhelm Tower was built on the summit in the late 19th century, during a period when observation towers were going up on many German peaks. It still stands today and gives the summit its most recognizable silhouette.
The summit lies along the Marburger Weg, a walking route that links several peaks across the region and draws hikers from the surrounding towns. Following this trail gives a clear sense of how deeply rooted walking culture is in this part of Hesse.
A side road from Hatzfeld-Eifa leads to the summit area and meets Federal Road 253, where parking is available at the base. From there, marked hiking trails make the ascent easy to follow.
Just 35 meters east of the highest point, an OHGV mountain shelter offers rest to hikers passing through. It sits so close to the summit that many visitors walk right past it without noticing it is there.
