Schloss Merlsheim, Medieval château in Nieheim, Germany.

Schloss Merlsheim is a castle in the Weser region consisting of two wings built with plastered rubble stone and corner quoins featuring decorative gables across multiple stories. The two building sections are organically connected and form an enclosed courtyard with distinctive architecture.

The castle was built around 1420 by Sievert von Oeynhausen and gained its current appearance through extensive reconstruction between 1665 and 1667 under Paderborn canon Kasper Philipp von Ketteler. This rebuilding phase shaped the Renaissance and Baroque style the building displays today.

The castle displays Renaissance and Baroque features that are visible in its gate with rusticated frame and triangular pediment. These architectural details shape the character of the property and show how different periods meet in its appearance.

The castle has been in private ownership by the von und zur Mühlen family since 1920 and is operated as an agricultural and forestry estate. Visitors should keep in mind that this is a private residential property with potentially limited access.

The basement of the southern wing preserves original structural elements from the medieval castle of 1420. These underground remains form the true foundation of the castle and show how the original fortress survived beneath later renovations.
