Schillerplatz, Central square with historical monument in Mainz, Germany.
Schillerplatz is a central square in Mainz surrounded by stately buildings from the Baroque and Rococo periods. A bronze statue of Friedrich Schiller on a Belgian marble base stands at the center, with benches and shops lining the green space around it.
In medieval times, the square was the only flood-free marketplace in Mainz and served for grain and livestock trading. This role as a commercial hub defined the location for centuries.
The square hosts the annual proclamation of Mainz's Carnival season, a tradition that shapes the city's identity. Visitors can experience the energy and customs that define this regional celebration.
The square is easy to reach on foot and offers plenty of seating around the central monument for rest. Nearby cafes and shops are useful for refreshment and leisure while exploring the surroundings.
The bronze Schiller statue, installed in 1862, holds an open book in its hands as a symbol of the poet. The statue was relocated to its current position within the square in 1929, reflecting how the space has evolved over time.
