Schulenburg

Schulenburg is a medieval castle complex near Salzwedel situated on a plateau and encircled by a high earthwork rampart. The mound still shows the location of a former central tower, and traces of an old riverbed indicate the presence of a protective moat.

The Slavic fortress was built in the 9th century and initially served as a refuge for the local population. Archaeological findings suggest that a settlement stood in front of the main structure and the site was part of a larger defensive network.

The fortification displays construction methods that appear in other regional castles and reflects the craftsmanship of Slavic builders. Visitors can observe how such defensive structures were designed and what role they played in the settlement pattern of that era.

The site lies in a meadow landscape and is visible from the road to Marlow, where an artificial depression marks its location. Sturdy footwear is advisable since the terrain is uneven and can be muddy, especially after rain.

From the road, a noticeable ground depression marks the exact location of this ancient site and makes it stand out in the flat landscape. This natural marker makes the place easy to recognize even though little is visible above ground.
