St.-Johannis-Kirche, Lutheran church in Bad Schandau, Germany
St.-Johannis-Kirche is a church building in Bad Schandau with a 56-meter tower topped by a baroque dome. The structure dominates the market square and shapes the appearance of the old town.
A small chapel was built in 1445 as a branch church and became an independent parish in 1459. A major fire in 1704 caused significant damage, leading to major renewal work.
The Renaissance altar originally came from a church in Dresden and arrived here in 1927. It shows the artistic connection between that city and this valley.
The building stands in the center at the market square, making it easy to reach on foot. Parking is available near the Elbkai area, and public transport stops directly at Bad Schandau.
The pulpit was carved from a single block of sandstone and rests on a figure of the prophet Moses. This artwork was created after the 1704 fire and shows the skilled craftsmanship of that era.
