Bad Schandau

Bad Schandau is a spa resort nestled along the Elbe River in Saxon Switzerland, with steep sandstone cliffs surrounding it on all sides and a valley carved by the Kirnitzsch stream. The town spans multiple elevations and connects the river corridor with the plateaus above.

The settlement appears in records from 1445 and received town rights in 1467 due to its key position for Elbe River commerce. It became a recognized spa destination in the 20th century.

Traditional half-timbered houses line the neighborhoods along the riverbanks, reflecting how locals have built and lived in this valley for generations. These structures frame daily life in the streets and create the visual character you encounter while walking through town.

The train station offers regular connections to Dresden and Prague, making arrival straightforward and further travel easy. River ferries also cross the Elbe and provide access to areas on both sides of the valley.

An electric cable car built in 1904 carries visitors uphill to the village of Ostrau perched on a plateau above town. This engineering achievement is notable because it solved the problem of reaching the heights before modern roads existed.
