Affensteine, Rock formation in Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge, Germany
The Affensteine is a sandstone rock formation in Saxon Switzerland with towers reaching up to 458 meters and displaying deep cracks and fissures. The rocks form an impressive chain in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains near Bad Schandau.
The sandstone rocks formed during the early Cretaceous period about 100 million years ago when the entire region lay beneath a shallow sea. Over millions of years, water and erosion shaped these distinctive towers and cracks.
The name comes from an old tale about a nobleman seeking escape from captivity with help from a monkey. This story appears in various artworks and depictions throughout the region that visitors can discover.
The area can be explored on several marked paths that lead to different viewpoints and connect to the wider trail network. Sturdy footwear is important since some paths are steep and the terrain can be uneven.
Within the rock formation are the Carola Rocks, which offer specialized climbing routes for experienced mountaineers. From these spots, wide views open across the Saxon Switzerland National Park.
